History of the Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution;
Refers to the period of rapid technological, economic, and social change that began in the 18th century, shifting economies from agrarian and manual labor-based production to machine-based manufacturing. It marked the transition from traditional handcrafted goods to mass production in factories, fundamentally transforming industries, transportation, and daily life.

The industrial revolution manifested in a series of technological breakthroughs that powered the expansion of the technological revolution, all of them originating in Britain, most notable clusters of inventions.

The first phase of industrialization primarily occurred in Britain, before spreading to other parts of Europe and North America.Phases of Industrial Revolution in Britain ° -

COMMON TECHNOLOGIES/DISCOVERIES

Mechanization of Textile Production: Inventions like the spinning jenny (1764) and power loom (1785) revolutionized cloth production.

Steam Power: James Watt’s steam engine (1769) provided an efficient source of energy for factories, mines, and transportation.

Iron and Coal Industries: Innovations in iron smelting (e.g., coke-fueled blast furnaces) and increased coal mining supported infrastructure and machinery.

Transportation Innovations: The development of canals, roads, and later railways (e.g., George Stephenson’s locomotive, 1825) improved trade and movement of goods.

CHAPTER ONE:


INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION IN THE 18th AND 19th CENTURIES

The industrial revolution in Britain took place under various periods ranging from 1750 to 1945. 1st phase of industrial revolution -1750-1850 (cottage system)

This was the beginning of British Industrialization based on the cottage system, with simple and light machines, which were small-scale industries that applied simple technology. The machines were based on department IItypes of machines such as windmills, water frames, power looms, and hand looms used for producing simple consumer goods such as clothes, cigarettes, food stuff, and beverage. Industries relied on woods as the major source of fuel.

2nd phase 1850-1870 (victorious phase)

In this phase, Britain became the Workshop of theWorld, had reached at the peak of its industrial —V revolution, characterized by heavy and complex machines which applied more advanced technology, most of the products produced were capital goods such as machines and locomotives. It was during this phase, Britain was named the Workshop of the World or hegemony of the Worid (industrial supremacy).

3rd phase of industrial revolution 1870 -1945The British Industrial supremacy that dominated the other World countries from 1750 to 1870’ started to decline because of certain circumstances, associated with economic crises, poor policies, and stagnant technology. This phase witnessed the emergence of newly industrialized countries such as Belgium, France, the USA, Germany, and Italy that started to challenge British Industrial supremacy.

The Common Features of Industrial Revolution

Replacement of human labor with the newly discovered machines since all production activities were no longer made by human labor instead was done by machines operated by steam and electricity

Substitution of unskilled laborers with more skilled laberers who were competent enough to operate the newly discovered machines which required application of sophisticated technology. ;

Increase in quality and quantity of manufactured goods. The discovery of machines increased the surplus production of manufactured goods, particularly textile commodities for exchange. Transformation of Agrarian societies in the industrial societies (modern societies) that depended on the industrial sector for their livelihood. ;

Urbanization, development of industrialization in Europe stimulated the rapid growth of towns and cities because of being industrial centers, such as Yorkshire, Bristol, Birmingham, and Derbyshire. Industrialists, traders and workers were influenced to live in those towns. .

Advancement in science and technology: The industrial revolution motivated growth of science and technology, i.e. inventions and discovery of modern techniques and machine of production. ;

Development of stiff competition among the industrialists in both production and marketing of their manufactured goods, leading to the development of laisser-faire trade. Overproduction of the same industrial goods, mainly textile products such as clothes predominated during the era of the industrial revolution.

Development of urbanization; Prior to the industrial revolution, the majority of people lived in rural areas and were engaged in Agriculture. As industrial revolution took-off many farmers moved to cities to get jobs in factories, leading to the rapid growth of towns and cities because of overcrowding of industrialists, traders and workers around the industrial centres, such as Yorkshire, Bristol, Birmingham and Derbyshire.

The transformation of agrarian into industrial society; before the 18" century human society was mostly organized around rural economies with a focus on farming But with the industrialization, human settlements shifted from rural, agricultural, based societies to industrialized, urban ones (modern societies) that depended on the industrial sector for their livelihood. By 19" century many towns and cities like Yorkshire, Derby-shire, Bristols and Birmingham emerged,

Working conditions were horrible; As industrial centres grew, led to increase of some problems such as over-crowding in slums, lack of housing, poor sanitan conditions, disease, and poverty as well as introducing women and children into th industrial work force.


Processes of the Industrial Revolution

Industrialization involved several interrelated processes that transformed production and society:

Mechanization & Technological Advancements

Invention of machines (e.g., spinning jenny, power loom) increased production speed. Steam engines (James Watt, 1769) provided power for factories and transportation.

Factory System & Specialization of Labor

Shift from small-scale home-based production (cottage industries) to large-scale factory work. Workers specialized in different tasks, increasing efficiency and production.

Energy Revolution

Transition from traditional energy sources (wood, wind, water) to coal and steam power. Later, electricity and oil (19th-20th centuries) revolutionized industries.

Transportation & Communication Improvements

Development of railroads, canals, and steamships for faster trade and movement of goods. Telegraph (1837) and later telephone (1876) improved long-distance communication.
 
Urbanization & Social Change

Growth of industrial cities as people migrated from rural areas to work in factories. Formation of working-class communities and emergence of labor union.



TRANSITION FROM COTTAGE TO FACTORY SYSTEM (1750s - 1870s)

Cottage System of Industries (putting-out system)

The cottage system (or domestic system) r
efers to a method of production where goods were made by hand in people's homes (cottages) rather than in factories. It was common before the Industrial Revolution, especially in rural areas.

Examples of Products Made under the Cottage Industry System

Textiles and Cloth:
Wool, cotton, and linen fabrics (e.g., weaving and spinning in Yorkshire and Lancashire in England).

Clothing: Handmade garments and knitwear such as sweaters, socks, and scarves.

Leather goods: Shoes, belts, and bags made from animal hides.

Metal goods: Simple tools, nails, knives, and household utensils produced by blacksmiths.

Wood products: Furniture, carts, barrels, and other wooden items.

Pottery and ceramics:Handmade clay pots, dishes, and decorative items.



Features of Cottage Industry (Cottage System)

Home-based production: Goods were produced in workers’ homes or small workshops, not in factories.

Small-scale production: Production was done in small quantities using simple tools and manual labor.

Family labor: Most of the work was done by family members, including women and children.



Simple tools and techniques: Production relied on hand tools and traditional methods rather than machines.

Merchant-controlled supply and sale: Merchants provided raw materials and collected finished products for sale in markets.

Low capital investment: Little money was required to start and run the industry since it used basic equipment and homes as workplaces.

Factory system The factory system is a method of manufacturing in which goods are produced on a large scale in a central location (factory) using machines and specialized workers.

Textile Factories in England

Used water-powered spinning frames to produce yarn on a large scale.

MAIN FACTORS FOR THE TRANSITION FROM THE COTTAGE SYSTEM TO THE FACTORY SYSTEM (1750S – 1870S):

Technological Inventions

Inventions like the spinning jenny, water frame, power loom, and steam engine** allowed large-scale and faster production. cottage industries could not afford or accommodate these large machines.



Increased Demand for Goods

Growing populations and overseas markets (due to colonial expansion) increased demand for textiles and other goods. Cottage industries could not meet this high demand, making centralized factories necessary.



Availability of Capital

Wealthy merchants and investors were willing to finance factory construction and machines.*Banks and joint- stock companies provided loans, making industrial expansion possible.

Improved Transport & Communication

Development of **canals, roads, railways, and steamships** facilitated the movement of raw materials and finished goods. Factories could now distribute goods widely and efficiently.



Access to Raw Materials

Colonies supplied cheap raw materials like **cotton, coal, and iron ore. Factories located near these sources reduced production costs.



Urbanization and Labor Supply

Enclosure movement and agricultural changes pushed rural workers to towns. This created a ready and cheap labor force for factories.



Energy Sources

Water and later steam power (coal) allowed machines to run continuously. Cottage industries relied on human or animal power, which was less efficient.

Political stability; Both Tudor monarchy and Bourgeoisie governments, played a vital role in financing the scientific and technological revolution, which brought in new advanced machines such as the spinning jenny, power loom, and water frame for mass industrial production. The Tudor kings defended both internal markets and infant industries by imposing a series of Navigation Acts, taking into account from the 17* century, to ensure control of overseas markets and raw materials for English textile industries.

Government Policies

The British government supported industrial growth by protecting property rights, reducing internal trade barriers, and maintaining colonial markets.

Decline of the Cottage System

Cottage workers lacked resources to compete with machine production. Factories offered cheaper, standardized goods, driving cottage industries out of business.

WHY BRITAIN BECOME THE FIRST COUNTRY TO INDUSTRIALIZE IN THE WORLD?

Britain became the first country to industrialize due to several key factors:

Abundant Natural Resources
– Britain had large deposits of coal and iron, essential for powering steam engines and building machinery.

Agricultural Revolution – : This was another reason for British : industrialisation in Europe by the mid: 18" century. The agrarian transformation took place because of the adoption of the new methods of farming (crop rotation), the use of agricultural machinery (seed drill), new crops (clover; fodders) as well as new animal breeds. All these increased agricultural productions, thereby leading to abundance of raw materials, such as wool, to feed the growing woollen industries in Britain. The agricultural revolution increased food production, which made
 
people comfortable and healthy. This led to rapid population growth that acted as labourers and buyers. Through enclosures, the agrarian revolution created labour force that was instrumental in industrial development in Britain, Therefore, under these circumstances, industrialisation was relatively guaranteed in Britain.

Political Stability – Unlike many European countries, Britain had a stable government that supported economic growth and property rights. Both Tudor monarchy and Bourgeoisies governments, played a vital role in financing the scientific and technological revolution, which brought in new advanced machines such as the spinning jenny, power loom, and water frame for mass industrial production. Strong Banking and Financial System – The emergence of financial institutions; the establishment of large Banks and Insurance Companies such as Barclays Bank, Bank of England, and Lloyds Insurance Company, enabled the industrialists to earn capital in form of loans and financial security to invest in manufacturing industries. In case of loss or damage were compensated to promote. A well-developed banking system provided capital for investment in industries and infrastructure example.

Colonial Empire and Trade Networks – Britain’s vast empire provided access to raw materials and markets for manufactured goods, fueling industrial growth.

Technological Innovations – Inventions like the steam engine (James Watt) and mechanized textile production (Spinning Jenny, Power Loom) increased efficiency and productivity.

Development of transport and communication networks; Britain had invested on construction of Roads, Railways, Canals, Harbors and Ships, which facilitated the transportation of raw materials and cheap laborers to industrial centers, where as manufactured goods were easily transported to market for exchange to generate super- profits

The demographic revolution played an important role in the emergence of British industrialisation. In the 18" century, Britain experienced a rapid population growth due to agricultural revolution. Agricultural development guaranteed enough food production and a comfortable life to people. Also, the high population created a high demand for industrially manufactured goods, thus, ensuring a reliable market. It also provided cheap labour to the industries as many town dwellers sought jobs, and others were employed in rural commercial agriculture to produce raw materials, With all these, the industrial revolution was guaranteed in Britain.







BRITAIN AS THE WORK SHOP OF THE WORLD

The term "Workshop of the World" was a nickname given to Britain during the 19th century, especially during the Industrial Revolution (Victorian age 1850 - 1870). It meant that Britain was the leading industrial and manufacturing nation, producing more goods than any other country and supplying the world with industrial products.

REASONS WHY BRITAIN WAS CALLED THE "WORKSHOP OF THE WORLD"

Industrial Revolution– Britain was the first country to industrialize and had advanced factories and machines.



Mass Production– British factories produced large quantities of textiles, iron, steel, and other goods cheaply and efficiently.

Colonial Empire– Colonies provided raw materials and served as ready markets for British goods.

Transport Networks – Railways, steamships, and canals allowed Britain to export goods worldwide.

Skilled Labor Force – Britain had many experienced workers and inventors.

Power Sources – Abundant coal and steam power supported continuous factory production.

Trade Dominance– Britain controlled global trade routes and shipping, making it easy to export products.

*Timeframe- This dominance was especially true during the **19th century (mid-1800s)** until other nations like Germany and the USA industrialized and became strong competitors.



FORMATION OF WORKING CLASS MOVEMENTS

The Working class movement was the organization of workers that was formed after the prioritization in Europe. One of the immediate causes of the working class movement was impact of industrial revolution like unemployment, exploitation which owners faced after working in industries, low wages, long working hours, and lack of land during enclosure system which led people to go to the towns to look for employment.

Factors that contributed to the rise of the working class movement a Rise of Industrial cities

There was development of industrial cities especially in the north and central parts of Britain. These cities involved Leads, Bradford, and Birmingham. The rise of industrial cities attracted people who sought employment in capitalist industries where they were exposed to exploitation and pressure.

Massive unemployment.

Since the capitalists could only employ workers if they could make profit out of them, industrial capitalism led to massive unemployment in Britain, This condition subjected the employed to low wages. In reaction the employees formed working class movements to demand for better wages.

Poor working conditions.

The poor working conditions in industrial countries contributed to the rise of working class movements. The workers were subjected to long working hours, poor working conditions forced the workers to form working class movement.

Agrarian revolution.

The Agrarian revolution was characterized by the introduction of the enclosure system which involved buying land from the small peasants by the wealthy capitalists. The enclosure system made many people landless and therefore they shifted to towns they were exposed to exploitation and oppression.

Napoleonic wars.

The wars between Britain and France during the period of Napoleon brought misery on the workers in Britain because they caused a great rise in the cost of living. The prices of food especially bread increased by hundred percent and there was heavy taxation which fell the working class movement.



LUDDISM (1811 – 1830)

Also known as the Luddite movement This was the first industrial working class movement in Britain. The word “luddism” came from an imaginary figure “Ned Lud” who was believed to be mythical leader of the movement. This movement dominated the early faces of the industrial revolution at the beginning of the 19th C. the movement concentrated on breaking machines because the members thought that their exploitation and oppression was due to the machines.

Aims/ Objectives of Luddism working class

One of the main achievements of the movements was to break the newly invented machines. The workers in Britain believed that low wages and massive unemployment was due to the new instruments of production.

Fight for better working conditions. The members of luddism were fighting for better condition in industries and mines. The workers in Britain were working in very poor conditions. There was very poor sanitation which caused various diseases.

Fighting for high wages. The members of luddism were fighting against the exploitation of the workers. The workers worked for very long hours but were paid very low wages.

Better social services. To fight for accessibility of social services and workers welfare like pensions, medical fees and insurance. These services were important because the workers were paid low wages.

FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THE FAILURE OF LUDDISM

Failure to identify the true enemy.

The members of luddism failed to identify their true enemy that is they could not distinguish between machines and the capitalists. The luddites believed that they were getting low wages because of the machines that are being
 
introduced, yet the fact was due to the capitalists who wanted to maximize profits by giving the workers low wages.

Illiteracy.

The members of luddism were not educated thus they did not present any program for reform because they lacked a clear ideology. Due to the absence of clear ideology, the movements lacked massive support for the people which later contributed to its decline.

The use of wrong methods.

The methods used by luddites were wrong. The act of breaking machines did not gain any sympathy from employers or the government. The government was determined to use force to suppress the movement hence contributing to its failure.

Disunity

The luddites were not united in the sense that some of the members preferred to use violent means that is destroying machines but some wanted to use peaceful methods that is engaging in dialogue with the employers for increased wages and better working conditions.

Absence of strong leadership.

The movement lacked strong leadership because it was based on an imaginary figure called Ned Ludd. The absence of strong leadership made it difficult to unite all the workers and fight against one common enemy, the capitalists.

Inadequate funds.

The movement faced the problem of inadequate funds thus it failed to run and coordinate its activities effectively in the struggle against the capitalists. It should be noted that the capitalists had a lot of resources at their disposal to sustain the struggle against the luddites.

Concentrated in urban areas.

The movement was not large in scope; it concentrated in urban industrial centers thus as a result it lost massive support in the country side. This factor contributed tremendously to the decline of the movement.

Lack of consistency.

The movement lacked consistency in the fight against the capitalist class. The movement was sporadic in its activities thus it failed to apply enough pressure against the capitalists thus contributing to its decline.

Strong opposition from industrial capitalist; The industrial capitalists employed various strategies to weaken and oppose luddites movements in most cases compelled the government to use its apparatus such as the Army and Police or enact parliamentary laws to suppress the luddites. Also they imprisonment the members of luddism.

The significance or success of the Luddite movement in Britain

Enlightened the workers.

The workers became aware of their exploitation and oppression by the capitalist class hence they started to act as a class by taking the action of breaking the machines, this reaction forced the capitalist’s class to respond positively by increasing wages.

Development of more working class movements.

It was an important catalyst in the development of working class movements in future, when luddism failed another movement known as Chartism was established which used some of the principles of luddism.

Unity of workers.

The movement contributed to the unity of workers by bringing together different workers from different walks of life under one movement, luddism. It is this unity which later contributed to the formation of Chartism.

Achievement of some rights.

The movement was able to achieve some rights for the workers; Example holidays and wages were slightly increased. There was prohibition of child labor in industries.



THE CHARTISM MOVEMENT 1838 – 1848.

Chartism was a working-class political movement in Britain (1838–1857) that demanded political and social reforms. It aimed to make the British government more democratic by extending voting rights and other political freedoms to ordinary men.

Founders/Key Leaders

Chartism had no single founder, but several important leaders and activists, including:

William Lovett – one of the main authors of the People's Charter.

Feargus O’Connor – a powerful speaker and leader of the more radical wing.

Henry Hetherington – radical publisher and activist.

Thomas Attwood – led the Birmingham Political Union, which inspired Chartism.

Origin of the name:The movement was named after the People's Charter of 1838, a document that listed six main demands. The Six Points of the People’s Charter

On August 6, 1838, the London working men association under its General Secretary, William Lovett met at the Newhall Hill, Birmingham to draft and publish the Parliamentary bill, which became the actual “People’s Charter” a document containing six demands of industrial working Men of London, to be submitted to the British Parliament 9) for approval. The six points listed were



(CHARTISTS PROGRAMS FOR REFORM): _


1. Universal Manhood suffrage: the Chartist demanded the government to grant the right ai to vote for every man twenty-one years of age, of sound mind, and not undergoing 1 punishment for crime.

2, Vote by secret ballots proposed: purposely to protect the elector in the exercise of his vote and freedom of individual voters from intimidation and harassment of the . Monarchy ruling class to guarantee free and fair election. .

Annual Parliamentary election: The Chartists wanted the government to conduct a general election annually on 24" June in order to make the elected leaders to be accountable and responsible to their voters.

Abolition of property qualification; For the members of Parliament, thus enabling the ; constituencies to return the man of their choice, be rich or poor, to be elected a member of the House of common. This could promote equal representation of people from different economic status and classes in the House of Commons.



Payment for the members of parliament: Thus, enabling an honest tradesman, working man, or other person, to serve a constituency, when taken from his business to f attend to the interest of the country.

Equal electoral District or Constituency divisions: The chartist wanted a new division of electorate areas (districts) to be determined by the size of the population that is number of voters dwelling in a particular place/locality to bring equality representat in the parliament.

Note:The movement came after industrial capitalism had efficiently developed and the workers had increased in number making their working conditions more horrible.

Features of Chartism

Mass Working-Class Movement: Chartism was mainly supported by the working class, especially industrial workers who were affected by poor living and working conditions.

The People’s Charter of 1838: The movement was based on the six demands listed in the People’s Charter, focusing on political reforms and wider democracy.

Use of Petitions: Chartists presented large petitions to Parliament (in 1839, 1842, and 1848) demanding reforms, showing peaceful and legal methods at first.

National and Organized Structure: Chartism was organized across Britain with local branches, conventions, and leaders who coordinated actions nationwide.

Combination of Peaceful and Radical Tactics. While leaders like William Lovett preferred moral persuasion (peaceful methods), others like Feargus O’Connor supported physical force if necessary.

Focus on Political, not Economic, Reform: Unlike trade unions, Chartism was primarily political, seeking to change the electoral system to give workers more representation in Parliament.

The factors that contributed to the rise of Chartism

he basic reasons for the rise of Chartism was industrial capitalism, however various factors can be identified that had contributed to the rise of the chartist movement.​

The poor law amendment act of 1834

This was an amendment to the poor law that was passed in 1601 by Queen Elizabeth to deal with the poor people. In this law the British government was providing basic necessities to the aged and the infirm (crippled). The exploited workers were given what was called “doles” which were relief funds to supplement the low wages of the workers. However after the Anglo – French war of 1795, the parliament amended the act whereby the government would only assist the aged and the infirm and not the exploited workers.
 
Economic slump of 1837 – 1838.

The economic foundation of Chartism was the economic depression of the late 1830s. This period was characterized by a decline in production which led to a rapid increase in prices and shortage of food. It also led to massive unemployment in Britain.

Collapse of the Grand National trade union.

The Grand National trade union was formed by Robert Owen. Its main aim was to absorb all different trade unions and use general strike as a weapon to achieve the goals of the workers. This trade union was however crippled by the government by sentencing the leaders to jail. The collapse of the union meant that the workers remained without a movement to express their grievances, thus the formation of Chartism.

Disappointment with the reform bill.

The reform bill which was introduced in 1831 in the parliament brought several changes. The parliament was divided into two categories, the House of Lords which consisted of dukes, bishops and king appointees and the House of Commons which consisted of members elected by the people according to the bill. For one to be elected he/she should have land and earning not less than 40 pounds per year, this law discriminated very many workers to be voted because they possessed nothing.

Increased in indirect taxes.

During the Napoleonic wars, the national debt had risen to 902,000,000 million pounds in 1816. The obvious way to raise such amount of money was to increase income tax but this was abolished and indirect taxation was introduced whereby taxes were increased on common articles like tea, tobacco, paper and soap. Thus in reaction the workers formed the chartist movement.

The corn law of 1815.

This was a law which was passed to protect the agriculture of the landlords against the post war slump. The law stipulated that there would be no importation of wheat. The intention of this law was to keep the prices artificially high in the interests of the landlords while neglecting the need for cheap food for the workers.

Why Chartists opposed the New Poor Laws Amendmens of 18.34?

Chartists were against the decision made by the New Poor Law of 1834 to introduce Changes in attending the poor, which turned to be a burden to the industrial workors as Narrated below:

Opposed the workhouse system; Chartist hatred the workhouses because of its horrors. It scemed to the working classes that the poor were being punished simply for being poor-hence the description of the workhouses as “poor law prisons”, they presupposed the previous parishes to save the poor.

b Source of family separation; Families were separated within the workhouses, becattse of the use of workhouse- test, and the paupers in the workhouses were classifieg according to age and sex, and segregated from other paupers. They also slept in differery wards, occupied different rooms during the day and ate meals at different tables. Thus Chartist opposed the New Poor Law because of family separation.

Resisted against the abolition of outdoor relief; Chartist were against the abolition y the outdoor relicf to the able-bodied paupers which usually took the form of money 4 support the poor to continue living in their homes rather than having to seek food ang shelter in the parish workhouses, The New Poor Law overhauled the system of outdog, relief by secking to make the workhouse the main form of support offered to the Por. however, it was highly resisted by the working-class,

Opposed less eligibility in work houses; Chartist opposed the principle of “le, eligibility” which meant that the accommodation offered by the workhouses should less desirable than the home of the most poorly-paid independent labourer. This wa made purposely to discourage influx in the work houses, but it worsened the life of th poor and the working class.

Strikes

The biggest weapon of the workers was a strike; this is where the workers stopped production aiming at making losses to the employers in the attempt of forcing them to make changes.

Factors that contributed to the decline of Chartism

Revival of the economy

One of the major factors that contributed to a decline of the chartist movement was economic depression of the late 1830s. During the 1850s, the economy was revived, trade increased and more people were employed. This prosperity made the workers to abandon the movement thus contributing to its decline.

Disunity

Disunity between the leadership and their followers contributed significantly to the collapse of the chartist movement. The leadership and their followers could not agree whether or not to turn the movement into a full revolution and overthrow the government so as to set up the peoples’ republic, some of the workers wanted to use peaceful means by negotiating with their employers.

Heavy hand of the government.

The government contributed significantly to the decline of Chartism. It used troops and laws to suppress the movement, some of the leaders were imprisoned while others were killed thus causing a decline of the movement.

Hostility of the capitalists.

The capitalists aimed at maximizing their profits and therefore were determined to suppress the movement. The capitalists were always suspicious about the intention of the working class thus they opposed whatever the workers were demanding.

Inadequate funds.

Inadequate funds were one of the paramount causes for the decline of the chartist movement. The working class in Britain was always bankrupt thus it could not sustain strikes for a long period of time.

Lack of permanent members.

Chartism faced the problem of absence of permanent members to support the movement. The organization had no clear regulation and principles to be followed by the members the members were free to join and leave the

Development of democracy

Due to the pressure mounted by the chartist, the government in Britain decided to give workers representation in the parliament. The owners were given equal opportunities like other people in political, economical and social affairs. Britain was among the first countries to practice real democracy.

Introduction of socialist ideology.

The movement contributed to the introduction of socialist ideologies in Britain because it claimed that the exploitation and oppression of the workers was due to capitalism. The leaders of Chartism such as Robert Owen used the ideas of Karl Max to oppose capitalism.

These union came to be known as new model trade unions because they formed by skilled and professional workers. One of the examples of the trade unions in Britain was the Amalgamation society of engineer (ASE)

Trade unions have regional or district officers and national headquarters with full time secretaries. They are also run by full time officials who are paid salaries. Trade unions also have a clear constitution.

Financially sound.

The trade unions were financially sound due to reliable annual contributions made by the members. The fees paid enabled the trade unions to sustain a long strike thus putting pressure on the employers.



Economic well being of the workers.

The trade unions centered on the economic well being of the workers, they demanded for better working conditions and improved wages for the workers.

The significance of trade unions in Britain

Introduction of unity and solidarity.
